Gérard Bertrand, the leading quality wine producer from the South of France, and acknowledged leader of the Mediterranean 'Art de Vivre', has set out to encapsulate all that is best of the diverse terroirs of the Languedoc Roussillon region.
The village of Tautavel lies in a picturesque river valley amidst the foothills of the Pyrenees. The summer heat and cool night-time temperatures, along with the poor, stony soil, are ideal for the cultivation of the typical grape varieties of the Mediterranean. Tautavel is the site of the oldest known remains of homo sapiens in Europe, dating back some 450,000 years.
VINEYARDS AND VINIFICATION
The grapes are harvested by hand from bush-trained vines, then separated from the stalks before a maceration of 10 to 15 days in epoxy-lined concrete tanks. Regular pumping over helps to submerge the cap during vinification, thus extracting the maximum of colour and of fruit flavours.
The grape varieties are vinified separately, and the final blend is then decided according to the qualities of each variety. The wine is then aged for ten months in a mix of new and used 225 litre barriques of French oak.
TASTING NOTES
Very dark, deep purple colour. The nose offers intense dark fruit aromas (damson, blackberry) overlaid with spices (clove, vanilla) and hints of chocolate, even of raw steak. On the palate, this is a big wine with plenty of very ripe, rounded tannins balancing the dark fruit notes and the alcohol. As the powerful finish develops, the typical 'garrigue' notes of the region (black olive, thyme) show through.
Best served at 18°C, this wine is ideal with grilled peppers, game (pheasant, rabbit, wild boar), Mediterranean dishes such as cassoulet or daube de bouef, and mature hard cheeses.
